THIS TOUR WAS INNAUGURATED IN THE SPRING OF 2022 AND IT WAS A BIG SUCCESS. ON A SCALE OF 1-7, THE TOUR WAS RATED A 6.9! That was repeated again in 2023 and 2024. PEOPLE LOVED THE UNIQUE ACTIVITIES, INTERESTING FOOD AND IMPORTANT HISTORY.

This is the perfect time to be in in the region. Temperatures are pleasant and blossoms are everywhere. Distances are relatively short so you spend time enjoying the places we visit and not spending large amounts of time on the bus to get there. It is a very pleasant tour that covers just 650 miles in the 10 days. There is much to see and do along the way and we are excited to show it to you.

Itinerary

April 7:  This morning we’ll meet at the airport for our flight to Norfolk, Virginia, arriving in the late afternoon.  Upon arrival, our comfortable motor coach will be waiting.  Our bus is new, air-conditioned, restroom and DVD equipped with a great sound system. We’ll drive about 90 minutes into the Outer Banks making a dinner stop along the way. Our hotel is in the Kill Devil Hills area of the Outer Banks.

April 8:  We are just a few minutes from the Wright Brothers National Memorial. This is where the Wright Brothers made their historic first flight in 1903. There is an excellent Interpretive Center in this scenic area where the flight took place. We’ll make our way along along the coast to Nags Head where we have an excellent lunch at Sugar Creek Restaurant. After lunch, we’ll be joined by a local guide that will take us on a tour to “Lands End” at Cape Hatteras showcasing two exceptional lighthouses at Bodie Island and Cape Hateras with picture stops at both (if time permits). We stay at a nice Hampton Inn in Washington, NC.  B, L

April 9:  We depart at 8:30 today and make our way south making a morning stop in Hampstead. By mid day, we arrive in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and check into our beach front hotel. You’ll have time for lunch on your own followed by a choice: You can stay in Myrtle Beach and enjoy the sand and ocean and relax at the hotel OR, if you’re of fan of world class flower/sculpture gardens, you can join your guide for an afternoon visit to Brookgreen Gardens ($20 admission not included). This evening, we have a fun dinner at Original Benjamins Calabash Seafood – a famous restaurant in this area. We then have reserved seats to the excellent high-energy variety show called Carolina Opry which all our groups have loved.  B, D

April 10: Today we continue our scenic journey with an 8:30 departure. In one hour we arrive in Georgetown at the mouth of Winyah Bay. We’ll board a boat and enjoy a scenic ride out to the Georgetown Lighthouse that sits on a very narrow peninsula on the ocean. Shells are everywhere and there are fun places to stroll. The light house is the oldest in the state, built in 1812. You’ll have some free time this afternoon to enjoy some browsing in Georgetown. We’ve included a tour of the Rice Museum which may not sound exciting, but trust us on this one. This afternoon, we continue south along the coast into the Charleston where we stay at Springhill Marriott for two nights.  B

April 11:  Charleston is one of America’s most intriguing cities – natural beauty, critical history and unending ambiance. Our first stop this morning is at the Charleston Lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island which, when lit in 1862 was the second most powerful light house in the western hemisphere. It’s 140 feet tall, with a triangular shape with an unusual cap on top. We then continue to Fort Moultrie (used in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars) to see an interesting film/exhibits before boarding our boat for our short ride to Fort Sumter and the beginning point of the Civil War. We’ll have a brief guided tour. You’ll have time for lunch and browsing in the famous City Market after which a local guide will spend two hours showing us the highlights of Charleston. Dinner is included tonight. B, D

April 12:  This morning we visit the interesting Boone Hall Plantation founded in 1681 by Englishman Major John Boon. In 1743, the son of John Boone planted live oak trees in two evenly spaced rows which creates an impressive approach. We’ll enjoy a guided visit followed by a delicious lunch.  We continue into the South Carolina Lowcountry making a stop at the Caw Caw Center with interesting raised trails through wetlands, thousands of beautiful tea plants with wildlife that includes alligators, Bald Eagles and more. We then continue into Savannah where we’ll take the Savannah Belles Ferry into the heart of downtown. We’ll stay in Savannah for two nights.  B, D

April 13: Savannah is one of America’s great cities with a rich and important history.  We’ll be joined this morning  by a local guide who will show us around the area and provide the interesting details.  As part of our morning tour, we’ll make a photo stop at the unique Old Harbor “Lighthouse” (this one is different than you might expect).  Lunch will be a treat as we board the Savannah Queen for a cruise on the Savannah River complete with a delicious southern-style lunch. Later, we’ll visit Wormsloe Historic Site and enjoy the walking trails through the woods passing historic ruins and enjoying lovely views of the Isle of Hope. This evening, you’ll have a chance to enjoy dinner on your own in the historic district which is a treat. We stay in Savannah again. B, L

April 14: This morning, we’ll visit the nearby Tybee Island Light Station which is one of our most intact light stations with all its historic support structures still on site. It is one of seven surviving colonial era lighthouses (opened in 1736). Those interested can climb the 178 steps for lovely views of the Savannah River and surroundings. You’ll also have a bit of time on the beach to stroll and take in the scene. We have a scheduled lunch at the Crab Shack on Tybee Island. We’ll eat on the outdoor deck with views of Chimney Creek and overlooking Gator Lagoon which is home to 78 baby alligators, exotic birds and more. We will then continue south making a picture stop at the smallest church in America (10 feet by 15 feet with room for 13 to worship). We make a rest stop at Georgia Peach World to sample southern treats and local products of the peach state. We will make a late afternoon visit to St. Simon Island Lighthouse and Visitors Center.  We’ll then continue into Brunsick (20 minutes away) where you can enjoy dinner on your own in a fun area. We will stay in Brunswick for two nights. B, L

April 15:  This morning we’ll board Captain Fendig’s trolley for an entertaining 90 minute tour of Jekyll Island where there is much to see and learn. We then visit the island’s 104 foot St. Simon Lighthouse which is one of just a few surviving Georgia lighthouses in a lovely setting.  You’ll then have time for lunch on your own on St. Simon’s Pier & Mallory Street. This evening, you’ll have a choice. You can relax and enjoy dinner on your own in Brunswick, or you can opt to go SHRIMPIN!. At 5:00, we’ll board the Lady Jane Shrimp Boat for a fun evening. This is an actual shrimp boat that has been modified for tours. There is seating in the cabin and space on the decks to enjoy the scenery. We travel down the Jekyll River and into the Atlantic Ocean where we drop our nets to catch our dinner – which will be a delicious shrimp boil.  Dolphins are often seen in the area. We return back to our Brunswick hotel. B

April 16: If time permits this morning, we’ll make a brief visit to Fort King George Historic Site built in 1721 along the Darien River. It was the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in the early 1700’s. We’ll then drive an hour south into Florida where we will fly home from Jacksonville. B
