Itinerary

July 5:  Salt Lake to Boston:  Today we’ll get an early start as we board our flight to the Washington DC area, arriving about 6:00 local time.  Our luxury touring coach will be waiting for us. Our hotel is in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. Evening is free to relax and be ready for the exciting journey ahead.

July 6:  After breakfast, we will begin to see the sites.  Summer is in the air and it’s a great time to be in Washington D.C.  We’ll see the impressive World War II Memorial with its majestic setting and inspiring layout.  We’ll also have a picture stop at the White House.  The most magnificent monuments this time of year are the new FDR Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial.  After lunch, we’ll visit Arlington Cemetery where we’ll see the Kennedy graves, witness the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and the impressive Lee Mansion (if you’ve seen the cemetery, you can choose from other activities).  During the day, we’ll also visit the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial. At the end of the day, you’ll have 2 hours to spend at the Smithsonian museum of your choice. A dinner is included tonight at Gadspy’s Tavern which was frequented by George Washington in the late 1700’s. We’re dining in the original building. B, D

July 7:Today we make our way north. We’ll stop at the Washington DC for a photo of this iconoc temple and a look around the Visitors Center. From the temple, we are 90 minutes from Gettysburg. Upon arrival, we’ll be joined by friend Deb who is a retired high school history teacher – and she’ll give us an excellent tour of the Gettysburg Battlefields. History changed here in a very important way.  After lunch, we’ll have time to see the excellent film and exhibits at the new Visitors Center. After lunch, we will make our way into nearby Lancancaster County  to enjoy some highlights of Amish country. which showcases some of the most beautiful farms in America. An early buffet dinner is included today. We then continue to our hotel in Philadelphia arriving around 8:00 PM. B, D

July 8: Today we spend the day in Philadelphia, one of our nation’s most historic cities. We have a timed entry this morning to visit Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence AND the Constitution were adopted. We’ll also see the Liberty Bell. After lunch, a local guide will then show us lesser known, but equally important sites in this history-filled city. After a rest, those who are interested can attend a session in the beautiful Philadlphia Temple which is very close to the hisoric district and disigned to match the colonial structures. B, D

July 9:  We are just 90 minutes from the Big Apple. We have taken thousands of people to New York City and we’ll have some fun showing you around. We’ll see the Statue of Libery (from Battery Park), stroll a part of the Brooklyn Bridge, see Ground Zero, take a walk in Central Park and much more.  We’ll stay in the Theater Disctrict and you can take in a Broadway show of your choosing.  Theaters are within walking distance. B

July 10: This morning we head for Boston. There is much to see along the way as we pass through the wealthy suburbs of the city and into Connecticut. We’ll stop at colorful Mystic Seaport for lunch and browsing in this charming area. We will then continue by Boston arriving in the late afternoon. A buffet Italian dinner is included tonight at Pulcari’s in Woburn. B, D.

July 11:  No city in the United States has more history than Boston, and we’ll spend the day taking it in with our knowledgeable and entertaining local guide.  We’ll see Lexington and Concord where the Revolutionary War began.  We’ll also see the Old North Church, USS Constitution, Paul Revere’s home, and much more.  We’ll enjoy a unique lunch and browsing experience at Quincy Market, near the old Fannuel Hall.  We’ll stay in the Boston area again tonight.  B

July 12:  Boston to Oneonta, NY:   This morning we’ll drive about 30 minutes to the northeast and make an interesting stop in the town of Topsfield where Joseph Smith’s ancestors settled.  They lived on the same homestead from the 1660’s (Robert Smith) to the early 1800’s (Joseph Smith Sr.).  There is a plaque commemorating five generations of Smiths that lived here and worshiped in the Congregational Church.  We then continue to Sharon, Vermont. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch prepared by the Young Women of the local ward. After our visit, we’ll drive to our hotel in Oneonta, NY.  B, L

July 13:  Oneonta to Palmyra.   We are about an hour from the Aaronic Priesthood Restoration Site in northern Pennsylvania on the Susquehanna River.   Much has been restored here and a new Visitor’s Center has been built.  It is a peaceful setting and an important stop on our trip.  We’ll have time to see it thoroughly as there is much to see.  We’ll then cross back into New York and head for Palmyra.  Upstate New York is covered with trees and the drive is lovely this time of year.   We’ll arrive in Fayette at about 3:00 and visit the Peter Whitmer Farm where the church was organized and much of the Book of Mormon translated. We’ll be in the Palmyra area for two nights.  Dinner is included this evening at a local restaurant. (Optional temple session this evening)  B, D

July 14:  Palmyra area:   After breakfast this morning, we’ll attend Sacrament Meeting followed by a chance to visit the historical sites of interest in the area. We’ll begin with the Sacred Grove, the restored Smith cabin and the frame home.    We’ll see the recently refurbished Hill Cumorah Visitors Center and go to the top of the Hill Cumorah.  After an included lunch at the Yellow Mills Café, we’ll visit the Grandin Press (where the first copies of the Book of Mormon were printed).  B, L

July 15: Palmyra via Niagara Falls to Kirtland:  This morning we drive up to Niagara Falls, arriving on the New York side around 11:00.  We have included a ride on the exciting Maid of the Mist which takes us to the face of the world’s most impressive waterfall.  We’ll then have time for lunch and falls viewing in the lovely park.   After lunch, we’ll drive along Lake Erie toward Kirtland, Ohio where we’ll arrive about 5:00.  We’ll stop at Fairport Harbor on Lake Erie. Many of the early Saints used this port to come to Kirtland. We stay in Mentor tonight.  B

July 16:  Kirtland all day:  There is much to see in Kirtland as much has been recently restored.  We’ll start at the Visitors Center built in the form of a 19th Century grist mill.  The town streets have been rerouted creating a pedestrian area from which to enjoy all of the sites.  We will also enjoy a guided tour of the Kirtland Temple which recently changed ownership. It will be a different and fresh look at this historically vital structure. We’ll also see the Newell K Whitney Store, the Isaac Morley Farm, and the newly restored Johnson Inn.   Kirtland is a quaint town, covered in trees and beautiful green foliage.  This afternoon, we’ll visit the John Johnson Farm where we’ll review the important history that happened here.  This evening we visit an authentic Amish Community where we’ll enjoy dinner with an Amish family at their farm.    We’ll stay in the Kirtland area again tonight.  B, D

July 17: Today we transfer to the Cleveland airport for flights home.  B
